"Medieval prayer books held not only the devotions and meditations of Christianity, but also housed, slipped between pages, sundry notes, reminders, and ephemera, such as pilgrims' badges, sworn oaths, and small painted images. Many of these last items have been classified as manuscript illumination, but Kathryn M. Rudy argues that these pictures should be called, instead, parchment paintings, similar to postcards. In a delightful study identifying this group of images for the first time, Rudy delineates how these objects functioned apart from the books in which they were kept. Whereas manuscript illuminations were designed to provide a visual narrative to accompany a book's text, parchment paintings offered a kind of autonomous currency for exchange between individuals--people who longed for saturated color in a gray world of wood, stone, and earth. These small, colorful pictures offered a brilliant reprieve, and Rudy shows how these intriguing and previously unfamiliar images were traded and cherished, shedding light into the everyday life and relationships of those in the medieval Low Countries. Our understanding of the lives and roles of medieval women has changed dramatically in recent years. Far from being background characters of the middle ages, women often wielded an influence beyond their expected station. Many women fortunate enough to receive an education became patrons of literature, particularly secular tales of adventure and romance. Some bold pioneers became writers themselves. Others commissioned, or had dedicated to them, the earliest historical chronicles, bestiaries, and treatises on healthcare and military prowess. This book celebrates the importance that women across Europe assigned to reading and literature, and the many ways women advanced medieval culture.

Christine de Pizan composed her famous defense of women, Le Livrede la Cité des Dames, as a response to the misogynistic writings of the time. She used the allegorical form to present the life and deeds ofvirtuous women as the metaphorical building blocks for the City ofLadies. In 1475, some forty-five years after Christines death, Jan de Baenst, a descendant of a prominent Bruges family, ordered a translation. Het Bouc van de Stede der Vrauwen is the only Middle Dutch translation of a work by Christine de Pizan and it has survived in only one manuscript.Christine de Pizan in Bruges tells the story of this unique codex by fo-cusing on the background of the commissioner, the codicological aspects, the highly original but unfinished illumination program the 41 miniatures executed are reproduced here in full colour and thetranslators personal epilogue.

At the beginning of the 14th century, far-reaching political events and social transformations rapidly changed the set-up of the Mediterranean basin and affected the Ordo universalis through which the material and symbolic spce of Christianitas had been previously conceived. The essays collected in this volume discuss this historical transition by adopting the lens of "exile", a long-lasting and intrinsically polysemic notion that experienced a new actuality in those decades. Far beyond the topos of the representations of exclusion, self-exclusion, and mobility, in their socio-historical as well as cultural and artistic manifestations, as different and yet intertwined attempts to redefine universal, local, and individual identities.
